Kenya’s youth form the majority of the population in Kenya, yet their representation in political leadership remains to the bare minimum. With such a huge potential to drive meaningful change in the society, young people face different  barriers that hinder their full participation in governance. To ensure a brighter political future for the young lads, several critical changes must be made.

1. Political Awareness and Civic Education

Many young Kenyans lack adequate knowledge of the political system and their rights. Comprehensive civic education programs are essential. they should be implemented to equip them with the necessary skills to engage meaningfully in the political arena. and dive right into political discussions in the country and taking part in decision-making processes.

2. Breaking the Barriers of Political Patronage

Kenya’s political landscape is often dominated by veteran politicians who have held power for decades. They hold dear the top brass of political parties leadership. Youth need access to political mentorship, funding, and opportunities that allow them to compete fairly in elections without relying on traditional power structures. They need to be given the chance to create, nurture and develop political parties.

3. Encouraging Youth-Centric Policies

Policies that directly impact young people, such as employment, education, and entrepreneurship, must be prioritized. The youth must actively push for representation in decision-making bodies to ensure their interests are well represented within the country.

4. Combating Electoral Corruption.

Bribery, vote-rigging, and political intimidation discourage many young people from engaging in the electoral process. They feel like no matter how hard they try the political elite will eventually have their way while even their say might not be heard. Strengthening anti-corruption measures and fostering transparency will help build confidence in the system and encourage greater youth participation.

5. Leveraging Digital Platforms for Political Engagement

Social media and digital platforms have become powerful tools for advocacy and political mobilization. Young Kenyans should continue leveraging these platforms to voice their concerns, hold leaders accountable, and drive political discourse.

The future of Kenya’s youth in politics depends on structural reforms, increased awareness, and active participation. By addressing these challenges, young people can break barriers, shape policies, and lead the nation towards a more inclusive and progressive democracy. The time for change is now. And the person to drive this change is you and me and our fellow youths. Together we can.
