This week on Saint of the Week, we feature Saint Martin de Porres, a humble Dominican lay brother known for his deep charity, miraculous healing powers, and unwavering compassion toward the poor and marginalized. He is the first Black saint of the Americas and a powerful example of holiness in the face of racial and social discrimination.
Early Life
Saint Martin was born on December 9, 1579, in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and a formerly enslaved Afro-Peruvian woman, Ana Velásquez. Due to his mixed-race heritage, Martin faced significant discrimination and was denied many opportunities available to people of pure Spanish descent.
From a young age, he showed deep piety, humility, and a desire to serve others. He apprenticed with a barber-surgeon, where he learned medical skills that would later assist him in his healing ministry.
Life with the Dominicans
At the age of 15, Martin joined the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima as a lay helper. Because of the racial prejudices of the time, he was not immediately allowed to become a full brother. However, his dedication to prayer, penance, and care for the sick soon won over his fellow Dominicans.
Eventually, Martin was permitted to take vows as a lay brother. He humbly took on the most menial tasks at the convent, from cleaning to caring for the ill. Despite these humble roles, his sanctity and miraculous gifts became widely known.
Miracles and Ministry
Saint Martin de Porres became renowned for his miraculous healings, even reportedly curing animals. He founded an orphanage and a hospital for the poor in Lima and tirelessly served people of all backgrounds, regardless of race or status.

Numerous miracles are attributed to him during his lifetime, including bilocation (appearing in two places at once), levitation, and miraculous knowledge. He was also known to have a deep connection with animals, often feeding and caring for stray dogs and cats.
His humility was so profound that he often referred to himself as a “poor slave.” He lived out the Gospel by embracing the least of society and seeing Christ in every person he encountered.
Death and Canonization
Saint Martin de Porres died on *November 3, 1639*, at the age of 59. His funeral was attended by people of all classes, races, and backgrounds who had been touched by his kindness.
He was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI and canonized on May 6, 1962, by Pope John XXIII. He is the patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, public health workers, and those seeking racial harmony.
Legacy and Lessons
Saint Martin de Porres is a reminder that holiness transcends social and racial boundaries. His life is a model of radical humility, service, and love for the marginalized. In a time when racial and class discrimination was rampant, he lived out Christ’s message of universal love.
His example continues to inspire those working for justice, unity, and compassionate service today.
Saint Martin’s life challenges us to examine our attitudes toward those who are different from us. He calls us to serve with humility, to heal where we can, and to love without discrimination. His faith, even when facing a systemic prejudice, reveals a holiness that changes hearts and community.
