President Ruto Declares Seven Days of National Mourning Following Raila Odinga’s Death

President William Ruto has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “towering figure in Kenya’s struggle for democracy and justice.”

In his televised address to the nation, President Ruto paid tribute to Odinga’s decades of political resilience, calling him a statesman whose contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey transcended politics and party lines.

“Today, Kenya mourns a great son of our soil,” Ruto said solemnly. “Raila Odinga’s name will forever be remembered in the chronicles of our nation not for the positions he held, but for the ideals he stood for: freedom, justice, and equality.”

The President acknowledged Odinga’s influence across generations, noting that his voice of opposition helped shape Kenya’s multi-party democracy and constitutional reforms.

Flags at Half-Mast Nationwide

Ruto announced that all national flags will fly at half-mast across Kenya and at all Kenyan missions abroad from Wednesday, October 15, until Tuesday, October 22, 2025, in honor of Odinga’s legacy.

He further postponed all public engagements and directed government institutions to observe moments of silence during official events throughout the mourning period.

“As we grieve this monumental loss, I urge all Kenyans to unite in prayer, reflection, and peace,” Ruto added. “Let us honor Raila Odinga by upholding the democratic values he so passionately defended.”

National Security and Cabinet Meetings Convened

Following the announcement, the President convened an emergency session of the National Security Council and a special Cabinet meeting to coordinate national mourning arrangements and ensure security during what is expected to be an emotionally charged period.
